Its area of 1,980 sq.km. makes it the smallest province in Spain.

Its population is 682,977 (2002), of whom about a quarter live in the capital, San Sebastián (Basque Donostia, Spanish San Sebastián). Other important cities include Irún, Errenteria, Zarautz, Arrasate, Eibar, Tolosa.
