Jaen - Andalusia
Its area is 13,484 km'². Its population is 647,387 (2002), of whom about one-sixth live in the capital, and its population density is 48.01/km². It contains 97 municipalities.
Although it is one of the provinces in Spain least known to tourists today, it has many interesting sights. Jaen has four national parks (one of them the size of whole region of La Rioja), among many other protected natural areas. The province also contains two important Renaissance cities, Úbeda and Baeza
The Capital - Jaen
Jaen is known as the World Capital of Olive oil, being the biggest producer. Industrial establishments in the city include chemical works, tanneries,
distilleries, cookies factories and textile factories. After the Moorish invasion of Spain during the 8th century, the city, then known as Jayyan, was developed as a trade centre. Remains of the Moorish fortifications and citadel still stand. Jaén is the seat of a Roman Catholic bishopric. Among the many points of interest is the Renaissance style cathedral, begun in 1532 and completed in the 18th century. Its population is 112,921 (2002), about 1/6 of the population of the province.
